ANDREWS - Dedication services for the newly constructed Holy Redeemer Catholic Church here will be held on Wednesday evening, August 28 at five o'clock. The Most Reverend Vincent S. Waters, Bishop of Raleigh, will make the dedication, and also administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to twenty candidates. Father F. Dehen, Pastor and Field Superior of the Glenmary Home Missioners in North Carolina, will offer the evening Mass of the Dedication of a New Church. For the past five years Mass has been offered in Andrews in a rented store building and in the basement of the Public Library. Plans for the church were begun in 1960 by Father Joseph W. Dean, then pastor of the Glenmary Missions in the three western-most counties of the state. In the same year Father Dean obtained the property in Andrews. Construction was begun in July 1962, and the church was completed in June of this year. Plans for the building were prepared by the Pease Woodwork Company of Hamilton, Ohio. The structure, which is a ranch type home designed to serve as a church-rectory combination, is of wood with buff-colored brick veneer. The church section is architecturally more ornate, having seven marble pilasters to symbolize the seven sacraments. The pilaster nearest the entrance supports a twenty foot aluminum cross, on which spotlights are focused. The floor of the church is terrazzo, and the walls of the sanctuary are of pecan panel. Communion tables which match the form of the table of the altar are among the more striking features of the sanctuary, all three tables are of poured white marble-dust cement. The altar itself is set against a backdrop of marble brick. The cost of the rectory-church combination was $30,000.00. The cost was kept at this low figure by the handicraft of the Glenmarians themselves. Brother Robert Hoffmann, of the Glenmary Artisan Building Crew, assisted by Brother Alfred Behm, were on the job from start to finish. Others who lent a hand in the construction were Brothers Timothy Highland, Richard Walsh, Pat Ronan, and Martin Vertassich. Through their efforts the labor bill was reduced to $3,800.00. Holy Redeemer Church opens its doors with a nominal debt. Due to numerous donations the Catholic Church Extension Society and Mr. Willias E. Stoecklein of Dayton, Ohio each contributed $10,000.00. Other donations included $3,150.00 from the Glenmary Society and $1,000.00 each from St. William's Catholic Center of Murphy, N.C., and from Rev. Raymond F. Dehen.. The remainder was borrowed from the Apostolate Revolving Fund of the Diocese of Raleigh. The public is cordially invited to attend the dedication on August 28.
